John Gilligan can transform Rangers’ fortunes – McAvennie
Rangers won’t ‘go too far wrong’ with interim Chairman John Gilligan in charge after he was brought in to replace John Bennett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Scotland striker Frank McAvennie believes Gilligan, 72, is exactly the type of man Rangers need at this moment in time but admits it will be a struggle due to the lack of funds at the club.
Gilligan was brought in following Bennett’s abrupt resignation due to ‘health reasons’ at the start of the season.
The Scottish businessman previously served as a director at Ibrox from 2015 to 2017 and was part of the Blue Knights group that attempted to purchase the club back in 2012 before their eventual liquidation.
John Gilligan backed to ‘sort things out’ at Rangers
Since Gilligan’s appointment, Rangers have shown improvement on the pitch, winning five of their last six games across all competitions, with their only loss coming against French side Lyon.
Currently third with 16 points from their opening seven Scottish Premier League games, they have a chance to close the gap on the top two after the international break, as Aberdeen face leaders Celtic.
“They go and fix one problem then another one arises”, McAvennie told Football Insider.
“I know John Gilligan, he’s Rangers through and through but he’s a nice guy and he’ll sit people down, talk to them and say ‘Look, how do we do this?’.
“He’s a businessman as well so he’ll sort things out, whether they have the money to sort things out is the biggest problem I think.

“He’s the man to steer the ship I think until somebody or a heavyweight comes in with lots of money.
“But with him at the helm, I don’t think they’ll go too far wrong.”
