John Gilligan is making big inroads behind the scenes at Rangers – pundit

John Gilligan will take the opportunity ‘with both hands’ after being appointed interim chairman at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes Gilligan, 72, is exactly the type of Rangers need at the helm to help steady the ship following John Bennett’s decision to step down.

Bennett, 61, called it a day on his time as chairman for ‘medical reasons’, leaving the Glasgow club in limbo at a time when the gap between them and Celtic is widening.

Former chief Dave King, the man who played a pivotal role in bringing title-winning manager Steven Gerrard to the club, has thrown his name into the hat to permanently succeed Bennett.

John Gilligan to steady the Rangers ship

Gilligan has been less than impressed with King’s claims that the club are in crisis, telling him to “behave like a proper shareholder” in a press conference following his appointment.

Still, Rangers remain five points behind their Old Firm rivals in the race for the Scottish Premier league title after just five games.

“John Gilligan will take this with both hands, he’ll go in there and try to sort it out, there is no way that he won’t, he’s that kind of guy”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He’ll go about it without it being in the papers, he’ll go about his business which will be a good thing.

“John will go about his business and try and do things, whether he can do it or not, it’s the finances that are the biggest problem they’re going to have.

“They’ve got a squad there, a manager, and a coaching staff that knows Rangers, Alex Rae is in there in that dressing room, he knows the club inside out.

“He should be telling these people what it means to play for them like Callum McGregor does for Celtic, he’s been there for so long.

“They’ve got all that, new signings are coming in now, people are still fed up, papers are none stop so we’ll see how it goes.”
