John McGinn backed to join Celtic after ‘deal was almost done’

John McGinn is in contract talks with Aston Villa yet could be persuaded to finally join Celtic after eight years.

Despite uncertainty over his future in the summer, former Man United chief scout Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider that Aston Villa will offer McGinn a new contract.

His prediction is set to come true with Aston Villa in talks with McGinn over extending his stay at the club.

Whilst a new deal looks almost certain, the Hoops may prove to be the pivotal factor to dissuade the Scotsman staying at Villa Park.

Celtic to finally get hands on McGinn at a later stage as Aston Villa tie him down

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Celtic are keen to finally bring the ex-Hibernian man to Glasgow.

The Bhoys seemingly had a deal sorted for McGinn back in the summer of 2018 before the Villains swooped in and stole him from the Scottish giants.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast over a potential long-awaited move to Celtic in the distant future, I explained: “I will be surprised if it was to happen anytime soon.

“It could happen in the future, there’s no doubt about that. There are strong links between John McGinn and Celtic.

“I think his granddad was Celtic chairman at one point as well. Got to remember, he came very close to moving to Celtic before he joined Villa in 2018.

“The deal to Celtic was almost done before it stalled and Villa obviously swooped in and the rest is history.

“There’s a deep connection between John McGinn and Celtic, but I don’t think John McGinn will be considering a move back up to Scotland any time soon.

“You can never rule out a move in the future. I’m sure it’s a move that might pull on his heartstrings in the future.”

Celtic distracted by McGinn as Brendan Rodgers remains the pressing matter at hand

Although a long-awaited opportunity to finally bring McGinn to Celtic Park would delight the fans, the club need to sort out their managerial crisis.

Sources told Football Insider that Brendan Rodgers looks set to leave Celtic at the end of his contract next summer.

Premier League clubs are queuing up to snap up Rodgers given his plethora of previous experience in the English top-flight.

The Hoops must provide him with the transfer backing the Northern Irishman needs to tempt him to stay in Glasgow or drastically begin their hunt to secure the next manager at the end of the season.
