Jonjo Shelvey: Pundit shares ‘brilliant’ verdict after update on Newcastle star’s future

Jonjo Shelvey is “Newcastle through and through” and deserves a new deal with the club.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider

On Monday, the Telegraph reported Shelvey, 29, is in line for a new contract.

His current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

The midfielder has experienced a resurgence under Eddie Howe, starting all but one of the Premier League games he has managed as Newcastle boss.

Kenny insists Newcastle need to overhaul the squad gradually and claims Shelvey can be a player who bridges the gap between the old and new regimes.

“He’s Newcastle through and through, you need those players around,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“You can’t just ship out all the players who have been there for years. It has to be a gradual thing.

“I like Shelvey, he always scores wonder goals. He is a brilliant player for me and he’s been a great servant for them.

“Even if he isn’t playing every game next year, it’s a long old season.

“You need options and Shelvey is the kind of player who can change the game if you give him the chance.

“It’s a no brainer for me, to give him a contract. He’s been brilliant since Howe came in.”

Shelvey has made 189 appearances for Newcastle United.

He has scored two goals and captained the side during last weekend’s draw against West Ham.
