Jonny Evans to Rangers: Man United insider shares big update

Rangers could strike a deal to sign Man United centre-back Jonny Evans in the January transfer window, according to the club’s former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that Evans will soon make a decision about his long-term future.

Having considered hanging up his boots before his shock return to Old Trafford, the 37-year-old is said to be weighing up his future in the game.

However, his performances in the Premier League for United have proven he can still perform at the top level, while a move to Scotland would allow him to play at a less-intense level.

Rangers’ interest comes amid a defensive injury crisis at Ibrox after Dujon Sterling’s injury against Hibernian left Robin Propper as the only available senior centre-back.

Meanwhile, Evans’ experience at the top level is seen as a valuable asset to a squad which is lacking leadership as things stand.

The centre-back has featured just six times in the Premier League this season and has been left out of the squad for six of United’s last eight league games, as he is no longer a major part of Ruben Amorim’s plans, opening the door for his departure.

Jonny Evans to decide Man United future amid Rangers interest

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson recently backed Rangers to land the “really smart” signing of Evans as his experience would benefit Philippe Clement in the dressing room.

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment and worked closely with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, has insisted that Evans will make the final decision regarding his future, but could be open to a move to Glasgow.

It depends on how long Jonny wants to continue playing,” he told Football Insider.

“He was on the verge of retirement when United brought him back into help them deal with their problems and he ended up staying.

“He hasn’t looked out of place and has done quite well when called upon.

“But now he’s out of the side again, and he’s going to make a decision about his long-term future.

“If he wants to keep playing, I think a move to Rangers would suit him.

“They’ve shown some interest and, with all due respect, it would be a move to a less demanding league than the Premier League.

“So it’ll be based on what Jonny decides, because he’s done his job at United over a couple of seasons and doesn’t seem to be in their plans any more.

“If he wants to continue playing and he’s enjoying it, then a move to Rangers is one he could consider, and if not, he could call it a day come the end of the season – good luck to him.”
