Jordan Henderson and big-name Liverpool teammate told to quit – pundit
Frank McAvennie has claimed Jordan Henderson and James Milner will be “surplus to requirements” at Liverpool next year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted the Reds need to hit the ground running when the season resumes or risk getting “swept away” by other teams.
Milner, 36, made his 600th appearance for the Anfield club in their final game before the World Cup break becoming the fourth player in the clubs’ history to do so.
Speaking to club media (12 November), the midfielder said he wants to keep contributing as much as he can to the club.
The former England international’s contract is set to expire in the summer whilst Henderson, 32, will still have two years left by the end of the season.
But McAvennie suggested Jurgen Klopp shouldn’t be relying on the pair every game.
“They are two wonderful players and have been two wonderful servants for Liverpool,” he told Football Insider.
“I think they will be surplus to requirements next year. If they can accept coming on for the last 15 minutes when they have got to control the game then that is what they have got to do.
“They had to play them all the time because of injuries. It is a young man’s game now and Milner is great to come on for the last 20 minutes or so.

“It is the same with [Harvey] Elliott, he has not been ready to play 90 minutes and that has cost Liverpool.
“They have got to hit the ground running when they get back because if they do not they are going to get swept away.“
