Josip Juranovic move inevitable after Celtic source’s talks reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic should not stand in Josip Juranovic’s way if he wants to leave the club in the coming transfer windows.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a breakdown in the 27-year-old’s contract negotiations may not be down to money – but rather an ambition to play at a higher level.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (17 November) that Celtic have given the green light to Juranovic leaving in January after new contract talks collapsed.

The Croatia international, who is under contract until 2026, was the subject of reported interest from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid during the summer window.

Juranovic is keen to listen to offers from Europe’s elite clubs just over a year after joining Celtic from Legia Warsaw.

Celtic have allowed the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Kieran Tierney, and Odsonne Edouard leave for big-money transfer fees in recent windows.

Whelan claimed the Hoops could reap another bumper payout if they allow Juranovic to depart.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “If you’ve got a player who wants to go and experience other things, then you can’t stand in their way.

“You just won’t get the best out of him if you keep him around.

“The best way is just to deal with it amicably and find out the players’ intentions – and that looks to be what Celtic have done.

“Sometimes it’s not even about money. It can be about lifestyle, family, and maybe even that ambition to play at a higher level.

“If you make sure you can do the right thing for the player, and the right thing for the club in terms of transfer fee – everyone’s a winner.”
