Julian Alvarez told to quit Man City and sign for giants after talks reveal – ‘he knows’, says Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Julian Alvarez should consider a big-money La Liga move as he will always be “second fiddle” to Man City star Erling Haaland.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Citizens wouldn’t stand in the 23-year-old’s way if he pushed for an exit.

Sources told this site on Wednesday (1 March) that Man City expect to agree a new contract with Alvarez despite interest from La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Man City

His current deal runs until 2027 but City want to hand him improved terms to reward his progress since joining the club last summer (2022).

Alvarez was a key man for Argentina in their World Cup triumph in Qatar but has started just six of a possible 25 Premier League games this season.

The former River Plate star has notched 10 goals in 31 appearances as a backup to talisman Erling Haaland – who has managed 33 goals in 33 games this term.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Real Madrid or Barcelona will be tempting for him, definitely.

“He knows that he’s never going to start at Man City in consecutive weeks while Haaland is there.

“He won’t start three or four games in a row – he’ll always be second fiddle to Haaland.

“Haaland isn’t going anywhere at the moment.

“It happened to Ferran Torres. He wasn’t playing, so he moved on to Barcelona.

“If I was Alvarez, I’d be wanting to move somewhere I’m going to play week-in, week-out.

Man City

“Man City won’t stand in his way if he wants to go.

“He’s had the taste of glory at the World Cup, so why would you want to come back and play just a handful of games?”
