Jurgen Klopp ‘in the market’ for ‘top’ player as late-window Liverpool signing expected – pundit

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will want to recruit a top midfielder before the transfer window closes.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Reds’ current options.

Liverpool are winless after three games and most recently lost 2-1 at Old Trafford (21 August) while turning in another poor performance.

Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Joel Matip, Curtis Jones, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Calvin Ramsay and Caoimhin Kelleher are all currently sidelined.

Against Man United, a midfield three of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott were overrun and failed to impose.

McLeish insists Klopp wants a new midfielder to bolster his options.

“We know Liverpool won’t be at the bottom of the Premier League for long but they do seem to have a midfield problem,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“They don’t have the consistency of picking the same three top-class players in there. There has been changing of the guard with Henderson being on the bench.

“He can affect the game when he comes on but you know he won’t last forever. There are a couple of others who are not top Premier League midfield players.

“You would think Klopp would be in the market for a really top midfield player.”

Liverpool

Liverpool have signed Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay this summer.

They are next in action against Bournemouth on Saturday (27 August).
