Kalvin Phillips and Pep Guardiola ‘conversation’ mooted after source’s Man City reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has claimed that Kalvin Phillips risks giving up his England place if he completes a move to Man City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-West Ham striker fears Phillips could struggle for game time at the Etihad.

Football Insider sources revealed (30 June) that the 26-year-old will undergo a medical at Man City on Friday.

Phillips has agreed personal terms with the Premier League champions and is set to join in a deal worth £45million plus £5million in add-ons.

McAvennie said that Phillips will have spoken to Pep Guardiola regarding game time.

“I don’t know the conversation he’s had with Pep but he’ll be asking, ‘Am I going to get enough game time to be in the England squad?’ Pep would probably say yes,” he told Football Insider.

“I think Phillips is a good player. He’ll just go in and do a job, just sit there and get the ball and give it to the players, that would be his job. And it’ll be right up Phillips’ street.

“It’s a specialist job just sitting there, just getting the ball and not going forward but just giving it to someone.

“I don’t know many players in the Man City team who can do what Henderson does at Liverpool, it’s such an important part of the team but I think Phillips could do that.”
