Kalvin Phillips could be manipulating Leeds United fans as update reported – Mills

Kalvin Phillips could be trying to appease Leeds United fans ahead of a summer exit amid an update on his contract situation.

That’s according to former Leeds United defender Danny Mills, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s possible plans to leave the club.

David Anderson of The Mirror reported on Wednesday (30 March) that Phillips has told the Leeds board he wants to sign a new deal.

The 26-year-old is contracted to 2024 but he has been heavily linked with a move away from Elland Road this summer.

However, Mills claims this development could be an attempt to save face with Leeds fans ahead of Phillips’ exit in the summer.

“I believe he has just changed his agent, so you start to wonder if this is a bit of a bargaining tool,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Is this to appease the fans? Is he going to come out later and say the club can’t match my demands? He could be trying to keep the fans onside.

“I don’t think it’s as simple as him wanting to stay. I think this is his last big deal.

“A five-year deal takes him past 30-years-old. He’s on good money now but he must look at some of his England teammates like Rice and Bellingham and think about how much more they are earning.

“People say he’s Leeds through and through and I get that to a point. But that point always comes with getting a new deal.

“He could move and get a deal that will set him up for life, you have to think about your family.

“All players have that ambition of fighting for titles and cups as well so that will be a factor.

“I just don’t think it’s as simple as people are making out.”
