Kalvin Phillips is staying at Man City ‘for the money’ – pundit

Kalvin Phillips is only staying at Man City for the money.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie insisted that Phillips has no chance of becoming a mainstay in Pep Guardiola’s side.

The 27-year-old has made just 21 appearances for City since his £42million arrival from Leeds United last summer and was only in the starting lineup for four of those outings.

According to The Telegraph (2 July), Newcastle United are now eyeing up a move for Phillips.

But whilst the midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Etihad, Football Insider revealed (10 May) that Phillips is keen to stay at the club beyond the summer.

The England international wants to fight for a place in Pep Guardiola’s side after a disappointing start to life in Manchester.

McAvennie insisted Phillips has no chance of seeing his minutes increase.

You can’t trust that you will get a game any week,” he told Football Insider.

Phillips is not getting a game at all. He comes out and says he wants to fight for his place, what a load of nonsense that is, it will be the money he is staying for.

Man City

There is no universe where he will get into the team before anyone else. I think he is a good player but the guys that he is challenging are world class, that is the difference and I just can’t see him getting in there.

“He will get his games but he will not be a mainstay.
