Kalvin Phillips: Leeds tipped to ‘to sign’ new contract after agent update – pundit

Alan Hutton has tipped Leeds United to make Kalvin Phillips one of the highest earners at Elland Road with a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland defender insisted the 26-year-old deserves to be rewarded for his immense rise for club and country.

As quoted by the Daily Star on Sunday (6 February), Phillips’ agent Kevin Sharp revealed Leeds have promised the midfielder a new contract and that he wants to stay at Elland Road.

Sharp insisted the England international was pleased the Whites rejected offers for him during the January window as he has no intentions to leave.

As revealed by Football Insider last week (3 February), Leeds are already in advanced talks to tie Raphinha down.

Hutton suggested Phillips would want to follow in the Brazilian’s footsteps and commit himself to his boyhood club.

Reacting to Sharp’s comments, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think that tells you the player’s happy. That’s the main thing. He’s enjoying his football.

“He’ll obviously see the likes of Raphinha possibly signing a new long-term contract. He wants to be part of the progression that they’re making and help them be better.

“Also, he’s now a full international player. In the back of his mind, he’ll be seeing other players signing new deals, becoming the highest-paid player at the club, this sort of thing.

“He’ll probably want to be on the same because he’s an integral part of that team, especially moving forward.

“So he should be rewarded for that. If there’s an opportunity for him to be offered a contract, you know he’s going to sign it. Just because of his feelings for the club.

“I think that would be a very smart piece of business to tie him down.”

Phillips’ last contract extension was signed back in 2019 when Leeds were in the Championship.

His current terms run until the summer of 2024.
