Kalvin Phillips told to take pay cut after Man City source’s reveal – pundit

Frank McAvennie has told Kalvin Phillips to quit Man City and take a wage cut.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Phillips won’t get game time at City and should be looking to move somewhere he will get minutes.

On 29 March, sources told this site that the 27-year-old is looking to transform his fitness and win over Pep Guardiola ahead of next season.

The midfielder has endured a difficult season at the Etihad since his move last summer but Football Insider has learned the Sky Blues have no plans to sell Phillips this summer despite his lack of impact at the club.

The England international is determined to break into the City side and is hopeful he can prove himself to Guardiola during this summer’s pre-season campaign.

Phillips has made just 13 appearances across all competitions this season, only five of which have come in the Premier League for a total of 56 minutes.

When asked if the midfielder has what it takes to turn his fortunes around, McAvennie told Football Insider:I do not think he will get a game at Man City.

I do not know why he went there. I know the money turned his head but how much does he need to make? I would rather go somewhere that I am playing for less money than somewhere that I would earn more but never get a game.

Man City

If he is getting £300,000-a-week at Man City I would go somewhere I was getting half of that as long as I am playing every week.

When he is in the team he does not do himself any justice and that is nobody’s fault but his own.
