Kalvin Phillips ‘will stay at Leeds United next season’ – Agbonlahor

Kalvin Phillips will stay at Leeds United next season despite Marcelo Bielsa’s sacking after his injury-hit campaign this term, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed potential suitors will have “big worries” about Phillips’ injury record.

The midfielder has not featured for Leeds since the 2-2 draw with Brentford at the beginning of December last year (2021) due to a hamstring injury.

Bielsa had no replacement to call upon in the England star’s absence and after a run of five defeats in six he lost his job on Sunday (27 February).

His agent, the ex-Leeds player Kevin Sharp, tweeted on Monday (28 February) he believed the Argentine would have kept the club up.

Jesse Marsch was confirmed as the club’s new manager later that day on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Asked whether what impact that may have on Phillips’ future at Elland Road, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Kalvin Phillips is in a different situation to someone like Raphinha.

“He’s been injured a lot this season. That will be a big worry for other clubs, seeing how injured he’s been this season.

“I’m sure he will stay next season, and have to do another season with fewer injuries before he gets his move.”

Sharp told the Sun last month (6 February) he wanted Leeds to honour their promise and reward his client with a new contract.

The 25-year-old’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024 as he last signed a deal when Leeds were in the Championship in 2019.

In other news, Leeds United have been handed a ‘big’ transfer boost by a 16 goal/assist sensation.
