Keith Wyness: Aston Villa could still lose Morgan Rogers despite new contract, here’s how
Morgan Rogers could still be in line for an Aston Villa exit in the near future despite signing a contract extension.
Over the summer, Rogers was heavily linked with a move away from Villa Park, with the Midlands outfit battling profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham all held an interest in the England international, but Unai Emery managed to keep hold of his star man.
Now, Rogers has penned a new Aston Villa deal that runs until the summer of 2031, but new hope has emerged for those keeping tabs on the 23-year-old.

Morgan Rogers may have hidden release in Aston Villa contract
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that his old side would have had to include some sort of release clause in Rogers‘ new deal to get it over the line.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the contract extension is likely to include three or four clubs that the attacking midfielder can go to if they come in with a suitable offer.
The former Middlesbrough man has returned to form in recent weeks after what was a shaky start to the season.
Wyness added that Aston Villa have done the right thing by tying Rogers down, even if there is a detailed release clause in his new contract.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “To get this done, there would’ve had to have been some sort of release clause. I think it may be for specific clubs as well.
“These release clauses are becoming quite complex. It used to be quite simple; you’d agree on a number and that was it. But now there are all sorts of clauses and specifics that are coming into them, and I think with Rogers, it’ll probably be a list of three or four clubs that he can go to for a certain price.
“Now, what that does for Villa is that it increases his valuation. Villa will get the full price for him, which is important because he’s one of their most important assets, and he’s performing very well for them. I think he could well become a bit of a star after the World Cup.
“So, Villa have done the right thing, but I do think there will be a very detailed release clause. It won’t be an easy one, as I say, and it may be restricted to certain clubs. Overall, I think Villa have done the right thing to get him tied up for as long as they can.
“He’s the right age, a very talented player. I’m told he’s a really good kid as well, his head is screwed on, and he’s got that bit of magic as well.”
Aston Villa tipped for more contract talks
Meanwhile, Aston Villa are reportedly set to hold contract talks with Emiliano Buendia after tying Rogers down to a new deal.

That is according to former Aston Villa and Man United senior scout Mick Brown, who claims that Emery is keen to keep the midfielder at the club.
Aston Villa were open to offers for Buendia during the summer transfer window, with the Argentine coming close to a move away.
However, the former Norwich star has worked his way back into the team this season and has been one of Emery’s most important players in recent weeks.
