Keith Wyness can’t believe Steve Cooper could be sacked after Leicester ‘mutiny’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Leicester City’s owners will continue to back Steve Cooper despite a difficult start to his reign.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the Foxes’ team doesn’t look like a “happy group” at present, something which will need to be transformed by the 44-year-old.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (24 September) that Leicester players are unconvinced by Cooper’s methods amid dressing room mutiny fears.

Club directors are believed to be increasingly aware that the Welshman is struggling to convince a sceptical dressing room of his methods and playing style.

Leicester have picked up three draws through draws with Crystal Palace, Everton and Tottenham this term and sit 15th in the table.

Fans booed and chanted against Cooper as the Foxes laboured to a penalty shoot-out win over Walsall in the League Cup third round on Tuesday (24 September).

Leicester board will back Cooper despite player mutiny, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ve got to back Steve Cooper.

“He’s handled tricky situations with Forest, with an owner who perhaps got involved more than he should have.

“But I think Leicester’s owners won’t interfere and will back the manager.

“They’re in a precarious situation and they need a happy ship with the team bonding together. I watched them against Everton, and they didn’t seem a happy group.

“There wasn’t quite the energy I expected.

“I think Cooper is a decent man manager from what I’ve heard. Look, we’ve got to see how it plays out.

“These rumours can be put around by the wrong people. I’m a fan of Cooper.”
