Keith Wyness can’t believe Wolves could now appoint Steve Cooper

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted bookies’ favourite manager candidate Steve Cooper is “not the right fit for Wolves”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Molineux faithful wouldn’t be happy if he replaced Gary O’Neil.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (10 December) that Wolves fear the manager job will be a “tough sell” for candidates if they sack O’Neil.

The search for potential replacements is underway at Molineux but the club are keeping faith with the ex-midfielder for now despite their dismal start to the 2024-25 campaign.

Steve Cooper is available after his sacking at Leicester last month and is the bookies’ favourite to take the job at Wolves.

Potential Cooper appointment would be ‘tough to take’ for Wolves fans, says Wyness

The Midlands club sit 19th in the Premier League table after losing away at West Ham on Monday (9 December) and are four points adrift of safety after 15 games.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Cooper coming in would be a tough one to take for the Wolves fans.

“There’s disquiet within the fans, but they should have been a lot happier with the performance against West Ham.

“Cooper would not be seen as a big improvement on O’Neil. He’s not the right fit for Wolves, so they’ll have to keep searching for the right name.”
