Keith Wyness: Chelsea ‘deals will be approved’ in stunning twist

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has backed the Premier League to close a loophole exploited by Chelsea “very soon”.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it was “very surprising” to see clubs vote against ending the loophole in June.

As per the BBC (4 September), Chelsea have been cleared by the Premier League for the £76.5million sale of two club hotels to a sister company.

It is claimed the hotels changed ownership from Chelsea FC Holdings Ltd to BlueCo 22 Properties Ltd, with both companies controlled by Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital ownership.

The sale has been ratified as fair market value and has therefore reduced their financial losses and helped the club avoid a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and a potential points deduction.

Uefa and the EFL have already banned such transactions, while a Premier League vote was defeated in June with only 11 of the 14 required clubs voting for a change.

Premier League to close Chelsea loophole ‘very soon’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Everyone’s watching Chelsea right now over this.

“Uefa and the EFL have stopped this loophole, and there have been moves to block this loophole in the Premier League – but it failed, which was very surprising.

“Nevertheless, I do expect it to be plugged very soon.

“All three competitions will then be in agreement on that loophole being used.

“At the moment, Chelsea can carry on and these deals will be approved for the hotels and training ground.”
