Keith Wyness makes astonishing claim about ‘five’ Chelsea senior staff after Enzo Maresca sacking
Chelsea have too many people making decisions at the club following their sacking of manager Enzo Maresca.
That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who has heard that Chelsea have five sporting directors.
Maresca departed Chelsea on New Year’s Day following just one win in seven Premier League matches.
However, Maresca was also sending cryptic messages to Chelsea’s ownership, including that he had “the worst 48 hours” at the club prior to a win against Everton in December.
Enzo Maresca was ‘unhappy’ at Chelsea
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Chelsea must show more “cohesion” in how they operate.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the Blues may benefit from having fewer people making the decisions.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, another one that we could see coming down the road of people at the top, aware of the decisions being made here. Maresca, again, unhappy with, I mean, what I’m being told, there are five sporting directors now at Chelsea.
“Now, there must be a cohesion in the way they work together, but still, that’s a lot of people to have a voice in the room over different issues. And I’ve always believed, as I’ve said from my days and the most successful period in Everton’s history it was because we had a chairman, a manager and a chief executive that made decisions. That was really it.
“And it was, I always say, and I believe to this day that you need as few people in the room as possible and as few voices, even in complex clubs that are Premier League clubs today. I still think you need as few voices as possible.
“Now, Maresca didn’t like, it seems again, the interference the same way as [Ruben] Amorim, but I think there’s a slight difference here in the way that Amorim, I think personally, couldn’t handle the pressure. I think Maresca was a bit more playing the game to a bit more of a degree.”

Chelsea make swift managerial decision
Chelsea have appointed Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior as Maresca’s successor, with his first game in charge set to be against Charlton in the FA Cup.
Interim boss Calum McFarlane will continue to take charge of the team for their trip to Fulham, with Rosenior watching from the stands.
Rosenior’s first Premier League game in charge will be at home to Brentford, with the Blues just behind Liverpool in the race for the top four.
