Keith Wyness reveals how much Aston Villa have to spend in January transfer window

Aston Villa’s January transfer plans will be dictated by financial rules and if they sell any of their players.

That is according to ex-Aston Villa, Everton and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who doesn’t see Aston Villa being overly active in the market.

Aston Villa have signed Brazilian winger Alysson, but the deal is only worth £10million for the 19-year-old.

Profit and Sustainability Rules have hit Aston Villa hard in recent seasons, and no Champions League revenue has hurt them this season.

Aston Villa ‘want to capitalise’ on Premier League position

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks injuries may also dictate any transfer activity at Villa Park.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the club would strengthen if they had the financial capacity to do so.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think the January window for Villa, as much as they would love to strengthen and capitalise on this position, they are still dictated by PSR, and I think they’re really going to move in the window only because of injuries or issues that could happen.

“It’s hard to forget, but we’re only halfway through the season. I mean, it seems like we’ve been living a big battle at the top for a long time now, but we’re only halfway. There is a long way to go yet.

“And I think, yes, injuries would be what would dictate them going in. There isn’t a lot of money to spend.”

Aston Villa star subject of Barcelona interest

Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest means Unai Emery’s side remain in the top four and on course to qualify for Champions League football next season.

The Villains sit six points off league leaders Arsenal, having already played the Gunners twice, making them outsiders for the Premier League title without January additions.

Instead, Aston Villa are braced for an offer for Pau Torres, with Barcelona interested in the 28-year-old defender.
