Keith Wyness suggests what could block Celtic from completing Kelechi Iheanacho deal

Celtic will have their concerns over whether Kelechi Iheanacho can stay fit if they were to keep the striker at the club.

That is according to former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after Iheanacho’s match-winning strike against Hibernian.

The Hoops secured a vital three points thanks to Iheanacho’s goal off the bench, as the 29-year-old made it four goals in all his last five appearances.

Celtic have an option to extend Iheanacho’s time at the club by an extra year, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Iheanacho’s future at Celtic may not be decided until a new permanent manager is appointed, with Martin O’Neill stepping down when the campaign concludes.

Kelechi Iheanacho giving himself a chance of new Celtic deal

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Iheanacho is starting to become a “fan favourite” at Celtic.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Iheanacho’s injury record will be part of the discussion when Celtic decide whether to keep the Nigerian at the club.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s Scottish Premiership stats at Celtic this season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: It’s funny when his option is coming up to be exercised or not he starts performing.

“We always said if Iheanacho scores in the big games, he’s going to get that option exercised. He’s doing it again. He’s done it a few weeks now and he’s becoming a fan favourite.

“The club would find it very hard not to exercise that option. Of course, there’s got to be health reasons as to whether his legs can stand up or not. His old hamstrings are the question mark, but he’s certainly doing it right now.”

Falkirk star could make Celtic move

Whilst Iheanacho could stay at Celtic, the Glasgow club will have other targets on their radar to strengthen their attacking options.

Sources have told Football Insider that Celtic are keeping tabs on Falkirk striker Barney Stewart amid the 22-year-old’s fine form this season.

Stewart has played a key role in Falkirk achieving a top six finish during their first season back in the Scottish Premiership, scoring eight goals in 16 starts.
