Keith Wyness suggests what really happened at Rangers with Danny Rohl and James Tavernier bust-up

Danny Rohl may have shown that he is the right manager to lead Rangers forward after omitting James Tavernier from the final two matchday squads of the season.

That is the view of former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after Tavernier was denied a start in his final home game for the club against Hibernian.

The 34-year-old, who was supposed to start on the bench against Hibs, claimed that Rohl had broken promises about his playing time, whilst the German boss denies the accusations.

Tavernier was then not selected in the squad again in what would have been his final ever Rangers game away at Falkirk on the final day of the season.

Rangers confirmed that Tavernier would be leaving the club at the end of the season last month, whilst the fallout has seen greater scrutiny placed on Rohl’s position as manager.

James Tavernier ‘took offence’ to Danny Rohl move

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that words have been exchanged between Rohl and Tavernier.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Rohl has shown his authority as Rangers manager, and that is exactly what the club needs.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “After such a long period of time in the team, Tavernier probably deserved to start the game [against Hibs].

“It may well have been planned for him to come off the bench and to get his round of applause. That’s probably what Danny Rohl had in mind. But I think Tavernier took offence to not starting the game and playing the whole game. Apparently there were words exchanged. That’s the way it goes.

“But God bless Danny Rohl. I mean, if you’re going to be a leader, and believe me, Rangers need shaking up right now.

“Rangers have been crying out for a leader to be strong and to lead the dressing room and realise that there is no messing around and that I am the boss. That’s what Rangers need.”

Concerns raised over Danny Rohl’s future

Rohl may be relieved that the season has come to an end, with Rangers having lost four of their last league matches.

The Gers finished 10 points behind Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, as Rohl faces a huge summer to ensure the club can compete for trophies again.

However, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Rangers players have doubts over Rohl following his bust-up with Tavernier.

Rangers stars could begin to lose trust in the 37-year-old, who is not expected to be sacked by the club before the start of next season.
