‘Leicester are taking a big gamble by appointing Van Nistelrooy – I should know’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Leicester City fans should be “worried” about the appointment of Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the hire is a “gamble” and admitted the Foxes will be in for a “white-knuckle ride” this term.
Football Insider revealed early on Thursday (28 November) that Van Nistelrooy has reached a full agreement to be the new Leicester manager after first breaking the news on Tuesday morning that he was the favourite to land the post.
The 48-year-old has agreed terms and is assembling his backroom staff ahead of Saturday’s (30 November) Premier League clash against Brentford – which could include ex-Man United colleagues.
He replaces Steve Cooper, who was sacked last week with Leicester 16th in the Premier League table.
Van Nistelrooy hire a ‘gamble’ for Leicester, says Wyness
Wyness insisted the appointment is a “bold decision” from Foxes owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Van Nistelrooy would worry me, if I was a Leicester fan.
“He’s emerged as the favourite. It would be a bold appointment, but I hope they’re not going off the fact that he had a few good games with Man United.
“I hope they’ve done more research than that.
“It would be a bold decision from the young owner at Leicester.
“It’ll be a white-knuckle ride going forward but maybe there can be a new manager bounce.

“Maybe they see something in Van Nistelrooy they can get behind, and maybe the players will be able to get behind him more as an ex-player.
“Everything’s a gamble, experience doesn’t always work and a gamble can sometimes pay dividends. But buyer beware.”
