Kelechi Iheanacho to Wolves: Transfer guru updates after ‘talks open’
Wolves are unlikely to pursue a move to sign Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla this month despite showing an initial interest.
That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that there are doubts about the 28-year-old’s ability to perform in the Premier League.
This comes after Football Insider revealed on 9 January that Wolves had opened preliminary talks after his club gave the green light for him to leave on loan this month.
However, Brown explained that Wolves are looking for “game-changers” at this stage of the season to strengthen their squad in an attempt to pull clear of the relegation zone.
Wins against Leicester and Man United, and a draw against Tottenham after the dismissal of Gary O’Neil gave Vitor Pereira’s side a fighting chance of survival despite a poor start to the season.
As things stand, they are in the relegation zone on goal-difference and are looking to strengthen their squad overall to improve their efforts to stay up.
Iheanacho had been identified as a potential option as he has struggled at Sevilla, starting just seven games since leaving Leicester at the end of last season.
Wolves unlikely to sign Kelechi Iheanacho after initial talks
The Nigeria international has failed to score a league goal yet, with his three strikes for the Spanish club coming against lower-league opposition in the Copa del Rey.
As a result, Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted that Wolves will be put off of making a move in favour of alternative options this month.
“There have been some concerns about his performances,” he told Football Insider.
“He would have good spells at Leicester and then drop off – I suppose the word I’m looking for is that he was in no way consistent.
“He’s gone abroad to Sevilla and that hasn’t helped, he’s not played well there.
“Wolves, in the situation they’re in at the moment, need players who are going to make an immediate impact and be game-changers for them.
“I don’t see Iheanacho as that player, and even though they’ve been looking at him, I’m not convinced Wolves will either.
“They’ll be weighing up a number of options and I’d expect them to go for somebody else.
“The one thing on his side, though, is availability. It’s not always easy to find somebody in the January window so if his club are willing to let him go, maybe they will act on that.”
