Kenny Miller delivers verdict on Rangers title chances ahead of clash v Motherwell

By Danny Wright

Veteran striker Kenny Miller has played down Rangers’ chances of winning the 2017/18 Scottish Premiership, suggesting that his side need to show more competitiveness.

The Light Blues suffered a mixed bag of results on their return to the top-flight under the charge of three different managers last season as they eventually ended up in third place behind undefeated champions Celtic and Aberdeen.

Pedro Caixinha replaced Mark Warburton as manager in March and has since overseen a major overhaul of the Ibrox squad which has seen nine new players signed up from teams across Europe and North America.

Even with the new arrivals Miller, 37, still seems to be in Caixinha’s first-team plans having started him in the Gers’ Europa League qualifiers against Progres Niederkorn in June and July.

The former Celtic and Wolves forward has now made it clear what Rangers’ plans are ahead of their 2017/18 Scottish Premiership opener against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.

“I am not going to say we are going to win the league but we need to be more competitive in order to be more successful,” said Miller in a pre-match press conference on Thursday, as quoted by the Glasgow club’s official Twitter account.

Miller lead the goal scoring charts for Rangers last season as he found the net on 14 occasions in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Caixinha will be hoping that he has added more goal scoring capability to his team with the captures of Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera over the summer.

In other Rangers news, Hearts’ interim manager has suggested how much the Light Blues should spend to prise Jamie Walker away from Tynecastle.
