Kenny stunned by Celtic-Rangers announcement -‘fans must be fuming’

Rangers are only playing a mid-season friendly against Celtic to make money.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Wednesday’s announcement.

On Wednesday (2 March) the Australian A-League confirmed Celtic will face Rangers in a mid-season friendly down under in November.

Some Rangers fans reacted furiously on social media when rumours of the friendly clash broke on Tuesday (1 March).

The account of prominent Gers podcast Heart & Hand tweeted they have “no interest at all” in playing a club who “claim we don’t exist”.

Kenny was left baffled by the announcement and claims the decision must be motivated by money.

“I don’t think that’s going to go down well,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I find it very strange. It must come down to money, that’s all I can think.

“Why would you go all the way over there just to play a friendly against your biggest rivals?

“They are meant to hate each other. The only thing can be for the money.

“The fans must be fuming with that. I can’t understand why the club would sign off on that.

“It’s like a Celtic thing Rangers have been tagged on to. That’s so strange to me.”

Rangers

As of yet, there is no official word from Rangers on Wednesday’s announcement.

The proposed game will mark the first time Celtic and Rangers have played each other outside of Scotland.
