Kieran Maguire: Arsenal to offer lucrative contracts after confirmed news

Arsenal are in a position to offer new lucrative contracts to their young stars because they have controlled their wage bill in recent seasons.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the wage figures from the Gunners are “impressive” considering they qualified for the Champions League.

Arsenal published their 2022-23 accounts last week, revealing overall revenue of £465million.

Their financial results also showed that their wage bill increased from £212million in 2021-22 to £235million last season.

Mikel Arteta’s side finished the season in second behind Manchester City, earning them qualification to the Champions League for the first time since 2017.

It comes as they finalise a record-breaking contract for teenage sensation Ethan Nwaneri, who will sign professional terms this month after a “significant” Man City offer.

Maguire explained that Arsenal can afford to tie down young players to big contracts after off-loading some of their highest earners in recent windows.

Arsenal’s wage bill will also have included the bonuses for qualifying for the Champions League so it is impressive that they have been able to compete,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

In the past few years they’ve shifted some high earners such as Mesut Ozil and Aubameyang.

They now have the flexibility to offer rewarding contracts to the young talent they want to keep at the club.

So I think they’ve got scope to increase those wages.

I’d expect them to increase again in a Champions League year – we usually see Manchester United’s wage bill soar by £50million after they qualify.”
