Kieran Maguire: Aston Villa ‘have to sell’ this summer after devastating £138m blow

Aston Villa will have to sell players to fund transfers this summer after recording losses of £138million over 2023.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Villa can no longer use the £100million Jack Grealish sale to Manchester City in their accounts this summer.

According to official Uefa documents, Villa recorded a loss of £138million over the course of 2023 – one of the biggest losses for any European team.

Unai Emery’s side invested heavily in the transfer window over recent windows, including £90million spent over the 2022-23 season.

Premier League financial rules state that top-flight clubs can make a maximum loss of £105million over three years.

Aston Villa face summer firesale after £138m losses

Maguire explained that Villa will be forced to sell this summer if they intend to make any new signings of their own.

Aston Villa have invested significant sums and now face big losses,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

They have had the £100million Jack Grealish sale to Manchester City as a get-out-of-jail-free card for three seasons.

But that expires on 30 June 2024 and so will no longer be accounted for.

They do have some desirable playing assets so it’s now a case of acting smart.

But they will probably have to sell to buy in the upcoming summer window.
