Kieran Maguire: ‘Boehly smugness evaporates’ as Chelsea transfer plan collapses

Todd Boehly thought he ‘outsmarted football’ with his amortisation strategy but Chelsea now face major transfer problems.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Boehly has ‘given Chelsea a ball and chain’ through his failed transfer plan.

Boehly became chairman at Stamford Bridge following the £4.25billion takeover in 2022.

Since then, the Blues have spent over £1billion in the transfer market on new signings but have failed to translate their huge budget into on-pitch success.

Boehly used amortisation to spread the cost of transfers with multiple arrivals signing long-term contracts – a strategy that has since been stamped out by the Premier League.

Chelsea now face huge losses as Boehly’s transfer plan falls apart

Maguire believes Boehly is no longer feeling ‘smug’ about his transfer strategy as Chelsea may have to accept big accounting losses on future sales.

I think the level of smugness that we saw from Todd Boehly a year ago has very much evaporated,” Maguire told Football Insider’s

He thought he had outsmarted football through giving players long contracts.

But what he has done is he’s effectively given Chelsea a ball and chain.

Many of the long-term contracts signed under his ownership are not going to expire until 2031.

Chelsea can move players on but many of them are on high wages which makes it more difficult.

We’ve already seen with Romelu Lukaku, who has spent two years out of the in his contract out on loan.

It’s because others are not willing to match the wages.

I don’t think Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo and Mudryk are on that level of wages, but it still could be difficult and they’d likely have to accept an accounting loss if that does materialise.
