Kieran Maguire can’t believe £200m Chelsea news – ‘It doesn’t add up’

Chelsea will not have a budget of £200million this summer as they have lost ‘an awful amount of money’ in recent seasons.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that he was ‘taken aback’ by reports that Chelsea will have a huge budget to spend in the transfer window.

Ben Jacobs reported last week that the Blues can ‘comfortably’ spend £200million this summer without sales before encountering Financial Fair Play issues.

The Blues have spent over £1billion in the transfer window since Todd Boehly’s takeover in 2022.

They have broken the Premier League transfer record twice in recent seasons with their £107million deal for Enzo Fernandez and £115million move for Moises Caicedo.

Chelsea transfer budget takes hit as ‘huge’ losses suffered

Maguire explained that Chelsea’s lack of European football and a front-of-shirt sponsor this season will harm their transfer budget.

I was slightly taken aback at the idea that Chelsea have £200million to spend,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

It’s very difficult to set a budget in February when you don’t know the status of the club’s European participation next season.

If we take a look at the Uefa report from this month, Chelsea made over £77million by getting to the quarter-finals – ironically under Graham Potter.

They haven’t replicated that this season and it will be a considerable task for Chelsea to qualify for the new Swiss model Champions League this season.

So I’m cautious over those claims as I don’t see how it could be done.

Chelsea

Chelsea lost an awful amount of money in 2021-22 and I assume they lost huge sums in 2022-23 given the changes at the club.

“They lost their front-of-shirt sponsor for the first dozen games or so which will have hit them hard so it doesn’t add up.
