Kieran Maguire: Chelsea ‘storing up problems’ amid £20m Moises Caicedo reveal

It will be ‘challenging’ for Chelsea to keep up with transfer costs once they return to Uefa competition.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about how Chelsea’s amortisation payments will change once they return to European competition.

The Blues broke the British transfer record to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton for £115million this week, taking their total spending this summer to over £300million.

The Londoners have used long-term contracts to spread the cost of transfers since Todd Boehly’s takeover of the club.

Caicedo’s initial cost of £100million will be spread across his eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge, but new Uefa regulations state transfer costs can only be spread over five years.

Maguire explains that a return to Uefa competition would increase the yearly transfer payments at Chelsea, which could be problematic.

Caicedo and Romeo Lavia have signed on long-term contracts and they will be fine from a Premier League point of view,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

But it does mean that Chelsea are essentially storing up problems when it comes to their Uefa agreement.

“So 2024 could be challenging, and expect to see some fairly significant people going out the exit door in that summer transfer window.

Because if Chelsea are in the top four then they are in a whole different ball game in terms of Caicedo’s amortisation.

If we base it upon a £100million guaranteed fee to Brighton then over eight years it works out at £12.5million per year, but under Uefa rules it would be £20million over five.
