Kieran Maguire: Chelsea will not have to comply with financial rules – because of Liverpool
Chelsea will not have to comply with Uefa financial regulations next season because of their League Cup defeat to Liverpool.
Finance expert Kieran Maguire exclusively told Football Insider that the one ‘positive’ from Chelsea’s League Cup defeat is that it gives chairman Todd Boehly an extra year to fix financial issues under his ownership.
The Blues suffered defeat at Wembley last month after Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal of the match in extra time.
Had Chelsea won, Mauricio Pochettino’s side would not have only lifted silverware, but would also have earned a qualification spot into next year’s Europa League.
However, participation in Uefa competition means clubs have to comply with financial regulations that cap spending to a percentage of their overall revenue.
Chelsea could gain financial advantage from League Cup defeat – Kieran Maguire
As per the 2024 Deloitte Football Money League, Chelsea’s wage bill sits at a staggering £404million – making up 79 percent of their overall revenue.
Maguire explained that the Europa League would have been a ‘lucrative’ competition for Chelsea next year, but insisted there are still positives for Chelsea not competing in Europe.
“Not qualifying for Uefa competitions this season is a double-edged sword for Chelsea,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“The reason I say that is because historically the Europa League has not been a significant earner for clubs but with the new Swiss model being introduced it looks as if the Europa League will generate slightly more money.
“You’ve got a bigger cake of Uefa prize money and therefore you’ve got a bigger slice.
“It does mean that the Europa League would be quite lucrative.
“You’ve only got to look at the quality of the sides competing in it this season – AC Milan, Roma, Brighton.

“It used to be a competition looked down upon but it is growing.
“The good news for Chelsea, though, is that it gives Todd Boehly an additional 12 months to rectify the errors made under his ownership without having to comply with Uefa financial regulations.“
