Kieran Maguire: Everton appeal may be delayed until they are relegated as ‘chaos’ reigns

Appeals from Everton and Nottingham Forest over points deductions may not be heard by an independent panel until after the end of the season.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that appeals may be heard after a club is already relegated from the Premier League.

The Toffees are currently awaiting the verdict of their appeal against the 10-point deduction they received in November after being charged with breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Everton will then face a second charge having allegedly exceeded the £105million allowable losses again in their 2022-23 accounts.

Nottingham Forest have also been charged for their 2022-23 accounts and the Premier League intends to resolve both cases before the end of the current season.

Everton points deduction appeal set for huge delay?

Both Forest and Everton are on the brink of relegation and a points deduction late into the season could plunge either club into the bottom three in the league table.

Maguire explained that both clubs will have the opportunity to appeal any punishment, but it could result in a ‘ridiculous’ situation where one or both clubs have already been relegated.

They do not plan on doing the Nottingham Forest and the second Everton hearings alongside each other,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

So we have separate rulings to reach and then we have the potential for appeals after that.

So we could have a situation where appeals have to take place after the end of the season.

Everton

That could result in a ridiculous situation where a club could get relegated in June and they are already recruiting players on the basis that they will be in the Championship but their appeal is ongoing.

So it could easily result in chaos.
