Kieran Maguire: Everton could now land ‘transfer ban’ in devastating new punishment
Everton could face a transfer ban for their second PSR charge as two points deductions in one season would be a ‘very harsh’ punishment.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Premier League have caused a ‘mess’ by not resolving Everton’s first charge last season.
As revealed by Football Insider, Everton could face a transfer ban if found guilty of their second Profit and Sustainability Rules breach this season.
The Toffees face a second hearing for breaching the rules again in their 2022-23 finances just months after being deducted 10 points in the Premier League.
Due to the league’s new fast-track regulations, any punishments for financial breaches should be settled and delivered before the end of the season.
Maguire believes a transfer ban could be explored as an alternative option to avoid giving Everton a ‘very harsh’ second points deduction.
“A transfer ban is one of the sanctions which could be given to Everton,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“If we take a look at what we’ve seen in the Champions League with Manchester City and PSG both given transfer bans, wage caps and financial penalties as opposed to points deductions.
“We saw Wolverhampton Wanderers being given a squad cap too, so this is an option.
“It does seem that there’s an element of double jeopardy if Everton receive two points deductions.

“It’s down to the Premier League itself being a bit of a mess.
“Everton’s first charge should have been dealt with in the 2022-23 season but it wasn’t and now there’s an element of catch-up and it seems very harsh that they could be punished twice in one season.“
