Kieran Maguire: Everton may be forced to sell ‘star player’ to avoid punishment
Everton will have to sell one ‘star player’ this summer to stay within their budget and comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Sean Dyche is also entitled to demand new arrivals from the Merseyside club.
The Toffees are still awaiting the verdict from their points deduction appeal and the decision from the Premier League over their pending 777 Partners takeover.
Dyche’s side are currently hovering just above the relegation zone but are unsure if they will regain any points from their appeal or face another points deduction from their second PSR charge.
To avoid further financial penalties, Everton may look to sell players this summer with plenty of interest in duo Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana.
Can Everton afford to not sell Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana this summer?
As revealed by Football Insider, Man United currently ‘lead the race’ to sign Branthwaite this summer.
Maguire believes Everton will have to budget to lose at least one star player this summer to ensure they avoid further financial problems.
“Everton will have done their budget for the three years ahead of June 2024,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Given their experiences in the last couple of years, they will know exactly what they have to do.
“I think in an ideal world, they’d quite like Neal Maupay’s loan deal to Brentford to become permanent by the 30th of June.
“They would prefer that to losing players that they view as integral to their squad.

“Sean Dyche is also entitled to go to the board – or whatever’s left of it – and say that the club cannot stand still and need to recruit.
“With all those factors together, I think losing one star player this summer is something Everton has to realistically budget for.“
