Kieran Maguire expects Newcastle United exodus to begin after £130m reveal

Newcastle United spending £130million this summer is only sustainable if they increase their number of player sales.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Newcastle’s projected FFP after the summer window.

The Magpies have spent £130million on new signings this summer, with Eddie Howe bringing in Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento to bolster his squad.

The Tyneside club have also offloaded Allan Saint-Maximin, Chris Wood and Karl Darlow to thin their squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Maguire believes Newcastle’s spending has been ‘modest’ this summer, but believes they will have to start selling more players in future windows to avoid a bloated wage bill.

“I think this has been relatively modest spending by Newcastle United this summer,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Costs will be amortised over the life of the contracts, but Newcastle haven’t gone down the Chelsea route.

I think they’ve offered a more standard length of contract even though they have been targeting younger players such as Anthony Gordon.

So I don’t foresee a problem.

At some point in time, we’re going to start to see more of a balance with Newcastle needing to sell just as much as they buy.

But we’ve seen Saint-Maximin go to Saudi Arabia, so there’s an element of profit with that particular deal.

As more and more players come in, ultimately, you don’t want a bloated squad and you don’t want a bloated wage bill as well.
