Kieran Maguire hails ‘absolutely essential’ Liverpool deal as £10m+ talks reach advanced stage
It is ‘very smart’ of Liverpool to buy back Melwood training ground as a base camp for their women’s team.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Liverpool’s latest plans to purchase the training complex.
As reported by The Athletic (31 May), Liverpool are in advanced talks to buy back Melwood as a base for their women’s side.
The Merseyside club sold the 12-acre site to housing developer Torus for £10million in 2019.
Liverpool’s men’s squad left Melwood in 2020 to move to a newly-built £50million training complex in Kirkby.
It is reported that the final price Liverpool will pay for Melwood this summer will be more than they sold it for due to the increase in value of the land.
Maguire praised Liverpool for the decision as it is ‘absolutely essential’ for the women’s side to be given top-class facilities.
“It seems FSG have seen the success at Man United, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal and realised that they need to be at the top table of the women’s game,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Therefore, having facilities of an appropriate standard is absolutely essential.
“Melwood looks like a very smart option given that the club have experience there.

“It will be good to have dedicated facilities which can meet the particular needs of the women’s team.
“This is a deal that makes a lot of sense and I’m sure the support base of the women’s team and everyone involved will feel much closer to the club as a result.“
