Kieran Maguire: Imminent £50m Chelsea deal could let Newcastle United off the hook

Chelsea’s imminent front-of-shirt sponsor could allow Newcastle United to justify signing bigger deals of their own.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the fair market value of both clubs’ deals.

The Magpies signed a £25million per year front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with Saudi Arabian company Sela this summer.

The deal was widely scrutinised but crucially passed the Premier League’s fair market value assessment.

As revealed by Football Insider, Chelsea are in advanced talks with Infinite Athlete over a £50million per season sponsorship agreement.

The Blues hoped to announce the deal before the start of the Premier League but the deal is currently undergoing a fair market value assessment of its own.

Should Chelsea be given the green light to partner with Infinite Athlete, Maguire believes Newcastle should use the value of that agreement to justify signing bigger deals of their own.

Chelsea have two Champions League titles and have won five Premier League titles to assist them in developing a large fanbase,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

“They are a global club with a fanbase that runs into the tens of millions.

“Newcastle United are in a position of catch-up so I think they will have to tread cautiously if they are going to make representations against the Premier League.

It might be better for Newcastle to use Chelsea’s potential £40-£50million front-of-shirt deal to help them justify and defend their £25million deal with Sela.
