Kieran Maguire issues ‘magnificent’ Leeds United verdict – ‘it is huge’

It is a ‘huge relief’ that Leeds United will avoid redundancies and wage cuts for non-playing staff after their Premier League relegation.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the impact of relegation on day-to-day staff at Elland Road.

The Yorkshire club were unable to retain their top-flight status last season, suffering relegation on the final day of the Premier League calendar with a 4-1 loss to Tottenham.

Demotion is set to have a major financial impact on Leeds, but The Athletic report that the club has told staff that there will be no redundancies or wage reductions.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said at Southampton, where the club has been forced into club-wide cuts including redundancies to account for the financial impact of relegation.

Maguire questioned whether the imminent new owners at Elland Road would continue to maintain the current pay of staff at the club.

It is a huge relief for staff members at Elland Road that there won’t be any redundancies or pay cuts for non-playing staff, but how long that guarantee lasts is open to question,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Leeds are set for a change of ownership and it is unclear whether the new owners have agreed to keep pay the same for staff.

The important thing is that staff do have greater clarity in the short term at least.

Leeds

How long Leeds can continue with their current staff numbers in the Championship is unknown.

But, the club has magnificent support and therefore many people are required at Elland Road weekly.
