Kieran Maguire: Leeds United board hit by supporter ‘anger’ after Elland Road latest

The Leeds United board have prioritised matchday revenue over fan anger by increasing the cost of season tickets at Elland Road.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Leeds’ decision to increase their ticket pricing for a second time in 12 years.

As reported by The Athletic last Wednesday (8 March), Leeds have decided to inflate the cost of their season tickets by 10 per cent for next season.

The Yorkshire club appeared in the top 20 of Deloitte’s 2023 Football Money League after recording revenues of £189million last year.

Leeds stated via their official club website that their season ticket prices “remain amongst the cheapest in the Premier League” even after the 10 per cent hike.

Maguire believes the large fanbase following Leeds means they will fill Elland Road’s 37,890 capacity regardless of the ticket price increase.

Leeds are stuck in a catch-22 situation,” Maguire told Football Insider.

They need to maximise revenues as the Premier League is not a profitable place to be – even though it generates a lot of money it tends to be spent straight away.

The club has invested heavily in the transfer market in recent seasons.

It also has to be considered that the Leeds fanbase is much larger than the capacity of Elland Road.

The board have got to weigh up the benefits of additional matchday revenue against the anger it’s likely to cause fans who are being charged extra for tickets.

But fans have the knowledge that if they can’t find the extra money someone else in the Leeds fanbase will and will take their place.
