Kieran Maguire: Leeds United well placed to rocket to next level as £200m set aside

It is ‘absolutely critical’ that the 49ers increase the matchday revenue at Leeds United after completing their takeover.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about plans to expand Elland Road.

Football Insider revealed last Thursday (20 July) that the 49ers have drawn up plans to expand Leeds’ stadium to a capacity of 55,000.

The Daily Mail (25 July) add that the new ownership group has put aside £200million for the redevelopment of the stadium.

Plans to expand the ground were first announced by former owner Andrea Radrizzani, but Leeds’ new owners appear keen to follow up on the proposed plans.

Maguire believes growing facilities and hospitality sectors will be ‘essential’ if Leeds are going to be competitive under their new owners.

“In a competitive industry where there are three sources of income, matchday is absolutely critical,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

We see the likes of Man United, Spurs and Arsenal with £100million-plus of matchday revenue.

With new financial fair play rules limiting how much clubs can spend on wages, it is crucial for Leeds to have facilities for regular fans.

From a financial point of view, it’s also important to have a good hospitality sector as it can prove to be very lucrative.

Expanding Elland Road is therefore essential if the new owners of Leeds want to be competitive.

It’s their decision and their choice, and it won’t be a cheap one.
