Kieran Maguire: Liverpool ‘extremely frustrated’ after meeting no-show – ‘clubs will have to step in’

Liverpool will be ‘extremely frustrated’ after social media powerhouses Twitter and Meta ignored the invitation to join the Premier League online abuse summit.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that ‘clubs will have to step in’ to protect their own fanbases.

The Premier League held a summit this week to discuss issues around online abuse and safeguarding in football

Social media giants Twitter and Meta were both invited to attend but were not present, leaving Premier League clubs frustrated.

Liverpool in particular have spearheaded the campaign against online abuse, with the Merseyside club launching their own campaign ‘Stop The Hate, Stand Up, Report It’.

The campaign calls for fans to report online hate and included the club participating in social media boycotts.

Maguire believes Twitter and Meta refusing to attend the latest summit shows a ‘casual disregard for safety’ by the two social media giants.

There are many good people at Anfield, and you can understand their level of disappointment,” Maguire told Football Insider.

There has been a somewhat casual disregard for safety and safeguarding by Twitter and Meta.

Both Twitter and Meta declining to attend the recent online abuse summit will have left the club extremely frustrated, especially after working so hard to challenge this issue.

It effectively suggests that the clubs will have to step in to protect the younger fans and members of the fanbase that they have a very close relationship with.
