Kieran Maguire: Liverpool hit by ‘bizarre’ transfer twist as FA intervene
The FA introducing ‘bizarre’ changes to overseas transfer rules shows the ‘terrible’ effect of Brexit on Liverpool and the Premier League.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the FA’s proposal to change the current governing body endorsement (GBE) rules for overseas transfers.
The current GBE system requires overseas players to tally up enough points to be able to qualify for a visa and complete a move to an English club.
However, The Guardian report that the FA have proposed a new idea that lets Premier League clubs sign four players without a GBE if the club gives 35 per cent of playing minutes to English players in the previous season.
Depending on the percentage of minutes played by English talent the number of signings would drop to three (30-35%), two (25-30%) or one (20-25%).
Maguire questioned the ‘bizarre’ decision by the FA given the success of English players such as Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham that have made a name for themselves overseas.
“The fact that the FA has had to propose a new system to deal with the current governing body endorsement rules is further indication that Brexit has been terrible for Liverpool and all other Premier League clubs,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“The FA are looking for a workaround and believe this could be it.

“The FA are concerned about the lack of playing time given to English players, although it does seem rather bizarre given that the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho have gone overseas and done well.
“It’s indicative of the insular attitude of the FA while young players seem happy to go overseas to develop their talent.“
