Kieran Maguire makes unexpected Man United claim after world-record deal agreed
Adidas are willing to lose money on their world-record Man United sponsorship so that they can remain connected to the club.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who told Football Insider that United’s new Adidas deal shows their brand is still incredibly attractive to sponsors.
The Red Devils announced on 31 July that they have extended their deal with Adidas to remain as the club’s kit manufacturer.
The deal is understood to be worth a record-breaking £900million over a 10-year period, smashing the Premier League record which was previously set by their £75million per season deal.
Adidas replaced Nike as United’s manufacturer at the start of the 2015/16 season and the German sportswear company moved quickly to extend their agreement.
Maguire believes the record-breaking deal confirms that United are still one of the most ‘iconic’ football clubs in the world despite their dip in success in recent years.
“While it is highly probable that Adidas will lose money on the Manchester United deal, it is indicative of the strength of Machester United’s brand,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“Adidas are willing to commit £900million over 10 years just to say that they are connected to one of the most iconic football clubs in the world.

“On the back of this, Manchester United will have certainty as far as their income is concerned provided that they qualify for the Champions League on a regular basis.
“Failure to qualify for the Champions League results in a cut to the present deal.“
