Kieran Maguire: Man City could face ‘backlash’ after shock announcement
Man City and their Premier League peers could face ‘backlash’ from Uefa after president Alexander Ceferin’s shock decision to stand down.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively revealed that Mark Bullingham’s decision to vote against Ceferin staying in power could have repercussions against the Premier League.
Bullingham – the CEO of the FA – was the only vote against allowing Uefa president’s to stay in power for more than three terms.
Following the decision, Ceferin announced that he will step down as head of Uefa, stating that he was ‘tired’.
Just days before the decision, Ceferin insisted that Uefa were ‘right’ to ban Man City from European competitions after finding that they had breached financial regulations.
City’s ban was eventually overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport after they appealed Uefa’s decision.
Ceferin tipped to bring hammer down on Man City and Premier League after vote
Maguire believes Ceferin holds ‘grudges’ and insists Bullingham’s vote may backfire against the Premier League.
“I think this is indicative of the four-dimensional chess and politics that is the viper’s nest of Uefa,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“I suspect Mark Bullingham is feeling pretty sore that he was the only person willing to vote against a Uefa president being able to have more than three terms in power.
“There could be a backlash against City and the Premier League now as a result of that.
“Ceferin does appear to hold grudges and when a person in power does that, then it’s a case of when rather than if those repercussions take place.
“We have until 2027 for a new Uefa president to take place.

“They will have a very, very full in-tray in terms of issues such as the Super League.
“I suspect they will spend very, very little time addressing issues such as fan welfare.“
