Kieran Maguire: Man City to hit the jackpot as Premier League plot revealed

The Premier League may have to offer bigger cash rewards to attract teams such as Man City to the United States.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the possibility of Premier League or FA Cup games being hosted in America.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters faced questions this week about whether top-flight matches could be played overseas.

Masters insisted US-hosted matches were “not part of current plans”, but the Premier League continues to invest in American viewership.

The Premier League Summer Series proved to be a success in pre-season, with over 270,000 tickets sold across the tournament.

The Premier League also opened a New York office this summer to support the continued growth of the competition in America.

Maguire believes there is a “desire” for matches to be hosted overseas, whether that be Premier League fixtures or a cup tournament.

We saw under Richard Scudamore that there were plans for a 39th game to bring in additional revenues for Premier League teams,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

I can certainly see some sort of desire to have matches hosted overseas, whether that be Premier League matches, the FA Cup or Carabao Cup final.

There is a lot of money to be generated, you only have to look at the success of the Premier League Summer Series to see that.

Perhaps there will be a more expanded version of that tournament with a greater reward to incentivise teams such as Man City to join in.

Man City

The Premier League is well aware that it is the top dog as far as European football is concerned and they are desperate to maintain that status.

With wages rising significantly faster than revenue, clubs will be looking at all options to improve income.
