Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United are ‘under pressure’ to cut ties with ‘cash grab’ sponsor

Aston Villa ending their relationship with betting sponsor Parimatch has put Newcastle United under pressure to do the same.

That is the opinion of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about Newcastle’s partnership with global betting and technology brand Parimatch.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Thursday (30 March), Aston Villa have cut ties with Parimatch after they were sanctioned by Ukraine.

Ukraine recently sanctioned 287 companies for continuing to operate in Russia following the invasion.

Newcastle and Leicester City are also partnered with the betting company and could face pressure to cut ties.

Newcastle partnered with Parimatch in 2022 and is listed as one of the club’s 14 official partners on their website.

Maguire believes Newcastle will feel pressured to cut ties with Parimatch to avoid a reputation as a club chasing money from sponsors.

The decision by Aston Villa has put Newcastle United under pressure to appropriately end the relationship with Parimatch,” Maguire told Football Insider.

Both clubs have assessed the situation and realised that given the abuses in Ukraine by Russia and Vladimir Putin, there is nothing positive to gain other than a cash grab.

It is an organisation that has no credibility in terms of ethical or moral compass.

Ending the partnership, which wouldn’t have generated a significant amount of money anyway, makes far more sense than the risk of being seen as a club chasing every available dollar.
