Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United hit with ‘hidden charges’ after £89m reveal
Newcastle United will have faced “hidden charges” in January after their “considerable” spending last year on four new signings.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the “constant” financial outgoings at St James’ Park.
Following their Saudi-backed takeover in 2021, Newcastle flexed their new-found wealth in the January transfer window in 2022.

The Tyneside club brought in Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Chris Wood and Bruno Guimaraes for a collective £89million as they looked to steer clear of relegation in the Premier League.
The recent January 2023 window was far quieter for Newcastle, but Eddie Howe’s side did invest £45million to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon.
Alongside the fee for Gordon, Maguire believes Newcastle would have had instalment payments to make on their four signings from the year prior.
“Football is a strange industry, it’s a seasonal industry much like tourism,” Maguire told Football Insider.
“The money generated is volatile because there are no matches taking place in the second half of May, June, July and early August.

“Meanwhile, costs are constant and then you have the complications caused by the transfer market on top of that.
“Newcastle United spent a considerable sum in the January 2022 transfer market, and given that most transfers are done through instalments I suspect there would have been hidden charges in the shape of anniversary fees due in January 2023.“
