Kieran Maguire: Newcastle United may now claim ‘compensation’ after eleventh-hour U-turn

Newcastle United may claim compensation after their overseas pre-season plans were scrapped at the eleventh hour.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ now-cancelled plans for the summer.

Both Newcastle and Wolves were due to play in the Ohio Cup in July alongside two unconfirmed sides from Spain.

Wolves

But the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday (17 May) that the event has now been cancelled without any explanation.

It is claimed that both clubs are furious at the development which leaves them at a loose end ahead of pre-season.

But Maguire suggests that they may be entitled to compensation.

“I don’t think Newcastle will see this as a hugely significant issue,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There will be other opportunities available, but it does come across as very unprofessional.

“It could be that they are entitled to compensation from the organisers. In that case, it would be a win-win.

“If they get compensation and they can organise another pre-season tournament elsewhere, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing.

“Newcastle would not be a huge draw in the Ohio Cup. It is more a case of team bonding rather than making a lot of money.

“You have to be of a certain level in terms of your global fanbase to make real money from pre-season. Newcastle want to be there but they are still aiming for that global footprint.”

Newcastle travelled to Saudi Arabia for a mid-season break in January.

But the searing heat in their owners’ homeland makes a summer visit unfeasible.
